Steve received his Ph.D. in Microbiology from Washington State University, studying bacterial pathogenesis in Campylobacter. Steve was a post-doctoral researcher at Imperial College London, where he studied the Salmonella PhoP/Q regulatory systems role in virulence. Steve left London for a post-doctoral researcher post at a CNRS center in Marseille, here studying Pseudomonas pathogenesis using C. elegans as a model, & later accepted a staff scientist position at this center to continue the work. Following his time in Marseille, Steve joined the LBMC ENS Lyon, here he was part of a team studying C. elegans epigenetics and stress response. Steve later chose to switch models and joined a team at the IGFL ENS Lyon studying neuro-muscular development in the fly model.
